Fishing Styles and Techniques

Given the variety of species, different angling styles prove effective. A light waggler setup, fished slightly over depth under the rod tip, is a favored method, especially for beginners and young anglers. This technique allows accurate feeding and the thrilling moment of watching the float disappear beneath the surface.

For the larger Siamese carp and bighead carp, a free-falling bait technique, where a waggler coupled with a slow-sinking hook bait is presented at a depth of 2-5 feet, is particularly successful. Regular casting mimics free offerings, enticing larger fish to act on instinct. This technique is recommended for active or advanced anglers, or as a father-and-son fishing experience.

The Specimen Lake – Premier Hua Hin Fishing

The Specimen Lake spans over two acres, resembling a traditional English estate lake. It is stocked with monster Thai and Amazon fish species, featuring quiet bays and lush marginal vegetation. Designated angling areas along a single bank provide each angler with ample space and the freedom to move swims throughout the day if needed.

Species in the Specimen Lake

With over 25 different species, anglers have the opportunity to catch multiple fish in a single day, experiencing both Thai and Amazonian specimens. The most common larger species include:

  • Arapaima (200lb+)
  • Chao Phraya catfish (120lb+)
  • Siamese carp (50lb+)
  • Amazon redtail catfish (50lb+)
  • Pacu (20lb+)
  • Alligator gar (30lb+)
  • Giant Mekong catfish (60lb+)
  • Julian’s prized carp, tiger shovelnose catfish, marbled tiger catfish, Asian redtail catfish, giant gourami, barramundi, and giant snakehead

Many native specimens, such as Java barb (6lb+) and Nile tilapia (9lb+), also make for exciting catches.

Targeting Predatory Species

The arapaima, a formidable predator, is often seen cruising near the far margins, surfacing occasionally for air. A simple leger setup with a fresh dead bait or live bait is a proven method for catching them. A pin-point cast towards showing fish can dramatically increase the chances of success.

Chao Phraya catfish and pacu shoals often stay in the upper layers during warm weather. This presents an exciting opportunity for surface fishing with a bubble float and bread hook bait. The method mimics floating debris, tricking these species into feeding. Chum mixers coated in attractors also prove highly effective.

Fishing in Thailand for Carp & Catfish

Mekong catfish and sawai striped catfish, both filter feeders, respond well to a ram ball feeder method, where a mixture of dry ram and water-based additives creates a cloud in the water, attracting fish. With repeated casts, a feeding frenzy ensues, making it possible to land multiple species in a single session.

For Amazon redtail catfish, fishing along the near margin with a light running leger and a fresh chicken carcass or hearts is highly effective. Over time, it has become evident that they respond exceptionally well to pungent scent trails. A chum-style feed comprising mashed fish, diced chicken, and crushed pellet with attractors such as tuna extract often proves irresistible.

Alligator Gar & Waggler Fishing for Surprise Catches

Alligator gar, despite being predatory, are finicky feeders. A small fish section or live bait suspended under a balanced float setup reduces resistance upon take, increasing the chance of a secure hook-up. Watching for slow, subtle takes is crucial to success.

The waggler fishing technique on the Specimen Lake offers a variety of surprises. By properly plumbing the depth and balancing the float, anglers can register even the faintest bites while keeping an opportunity open for Siamese carp and Amazon redtail catfish.

A popular method for Siamese carp fishing in Hua Hin is known as “on the drop”, where slow-sinking bread hook bait is cast towards showing fish in open water. The bait’s natural freefall triggers instinctive strikes, making this method ideal for active anglers seeking a challenge.
