Greenfield Fishing Village comprises of a
series of natural lakes set amongst 80 acres of privately-owned
estate within the rolling Greenfield Valley countryside. The
site is long established and is by far the most beautiful. By
working with nature, they have achieved an angling experience
surrounded by flourishing flora and fauna. The resort is in
close to several other attractions being 5 minutes from the
Banyan Golf Course, 5 minutes from the Hua Hin Safari, 10 mins
from the town Pran Buri and the beach. Hua Hin, the larger and
more popular coastal town is only 15 minutes away which is worth
a visit in-itself and is home to it’s famous markets, shopping
centres and beachfront.

Hua Hin Greenfield Valley Fishing Resort |
John Wilson Officially Opens Hua Hin Greenfield
David Wilson and his brother John Wilson
have featured in numerous fishing programmes centred around
Thailand fishing scene over the years. David progressed his
passion thus creating the resort as we see it today which was
officially opened in 2009 by John Wilson consisting of 3 lakes
at present.
The Facilities
The resort features a raised open plan restaurant perfectly
placed overlooking the specimen lake that serves a combination
of both Thai and Western cuisine complete with a highly
recommend full English breakfast. The restaurant can
accommodate up to 30 people and is open 8am until 6pm
alongside permitted angling hours and all meals can be
delivered to the swim. Accommodation is available on site
consisting of 4 large bungalows situated on the right bank
overlooking the specimen lake. They are available to rent by a
daily basis and come complete with kitchenette and shower and
all benefit from an outside terrace in scenic surroundings.

The Carp and Family Lake
The carp only
lake is unique containing a good head of fish
consisting of multiple carp species including
bighead, Indian carp (Catla catla), koi / common,
Saimese, black shark-minnow, rohu and Julian’s
golden carp just to name a few. It is set against a
thick woodland backdrop whilst vegetation
surrounding swims is maintained forming a tranquil
atmosphere in the heart of the Greenfield valley.
All angling is conducted from the right bank and
swims are equally spaced to provide adequate water
for each angler allowing access to both open water
and marginal features. Each swim benefits from a
table, seating, rod rests positioned under shading
from the elements.

Lake surrounded by thick green forest
Some of the species on
offer from the Carp and Family Lake
Given the variety of different species, several different
angling styles are effective although utilising a light
waggler setup fished slightly over depth under the rod tip
is a firm favourite.
This also allows youngsters and beginners to feed
the swim accurately before watching the float slide
beneath the surface.
The
larger Siamese carp and bighead often fall to a freefalling
bait and can be targeted ‘on the drop’ whereby a waggler
coupled with a slow-sinking hook bait is presented sub surface
at a depth of 2-5 feet. Casting at regular intervals is
important to mimic the free offerings and fool one of the
larger fish into acting upon instinct.
Therefore, we would
recommend this method for active / advanced anglers or a joint
input from two anglers such as father and son I order to truly
reap the rewards.
The Specimen Lake
At
just over 2 acres in size and fully matured the lake resembles
a traditional English estate lake fishery stocked with monster
Thai and Amazon fish species featuring quiet bays and marginal
vegetation. Each designated angling area is carefully located
along a single bank to provide each angler with their own
space to pursue something special. In addition to this the
number of anglers is limited meaning that you are permitted to
move swims throughout the day if the fishing is slow giving
you both comfort and freedom.
A view looking down
the Specimen Lake
If
you would prefer an extended session of two days or more
there are executive bungalows all of which are positioned
only a stone’s throw from the water’s edge on adjacent to
the specimen lake and less than a cast from the restaurant
and bar.
A selection of species
from the Specimen Lake
At
present there are currently over 25 different species in
the lake this provided an excellent opportunity to catch
several in day and experience the different Thai /
Amazonian specimens. The most common larger species are
arapaima (200lb+), Chao Phraya catfish (120lb+), Siamese
carp (50lb+) and Amazon redtail catfish (50lb+). Other
species to target are pacu (20lb+), alligator gar (30lb+),
sawai striped catfish and giant Mekong catfish (60lb+).
The lake is also
home to some of the rarer species being the Julian’s
prized carp, tiger shovel nose catfish, marbled tiger
catfish, Asian
redtail catfish, giant gourami, barramundi and giant
snakehead meaning that you really are angling for the
unknown at all times as different species move into the
swim during the course of the day. You may associate the
term specimen with size however this is dependent upon
species in question and the lake is home to some cracking
native specimens that include java barb to 6lb+ and Nile
tilapia to 9lb+ that should not be overlooked.
A selection of species
from the Specimen Lake
The arapaima are a predatory species that can often be
spotted cruising along the far margin among the
overhanging vegetation occasionally surfacing for a breath
of air before returning below in search of prey fish. A
simple leger set up baited with a fresh dead bait / live
bait is a proven method and coupled with a pin-point cast
towards showing fish certainly increases your chances.
Understanding their behaviour is crucial in order to
improve your chances of landing them but a Fish Thailand
team member will be by your side to provide on point
instruction throughout the fight.
The
Chao Phraya catfish along pacu shoals are in the upper layers
of the water body and are visible near the surface during warm
weather. This forms an exciting opportunity to target them on
the surface using a bubble float and bread on the hook. The
float mimics a bubble and the hook link is tied in a manner to
hook hold breadcrust and allow the angler to present a bait
out in open water without the fear of losing the hook bait.
Other traditional baits such as chum mixers also work wonders
and can be coated in additional attractors. The unique way the
bait is attached means that bait fish are attracted and attack
it but struggle to remove the hook bait creating a disturbance
naturally lure Chao Phraya catfish into the area.
A perfect margin spot
on the Specimen Lake
The Mekong catfish and sawai striped catfish are filter
feeders by nature meaning that they respond well to a ram
ball bound to a cage feeder suspended beneath a float in
middle layers. By working water and liquid additives into
the dry ram an even consistency can be formed whereby it
clouds the water column upon contact and creates a filter
feeding frenzy. With each cast to the same area creating a
larger cloud it is common to catch a variety of species as
they pick up the scent trail and begin hitting the feeder.
The
lake is home to several catfish species which are omnivorous
scavengers and may be landed by many means. We favour working
the near margin with light running leger and a fresh piece of
chicken carcass / hearts to target the Amazon redtail catfish.
Over the years we have come to realise just how much they
respond to a pungent scent trail surrounding the hook bait.
The chum-style feed usually comprises of a potent combination
of mashed fish / diced chicken and crushed pellet along with
additional additives such as tuna extract that can be tipped
into position at regular intervals, something that they simply
cannot resist.
One of several swims
on the Specimen Lake
Alligator gar are particularly finicky feeders that
despite being predatory often produce subtle takes. By
suspending a small fish section / small live bait beneath
a balanced float setup, the gar feels little resistance
upon hitting the bait. This means that they are far less
likely to drop it. Slow subtle takes expected therefore it
is advised that you always observe the float.
The waggler fishing on the specimen lake
is full of surprises as it often accounts for a variety of
different species when set up effectively. By plumbing the
depth and balancing the float even the feintest of bites may
be registered whilst still be open to larger species such as
Siamese carp and Amazon redtail. Fished at only a few rod
lengths from the bank, balls of ground bait can be accurately
bowled into position at regular intervals. This is an
excellent method for selecting specimen java barb and Nile
tilapia whist still retaining the opportunity to encounter
other species as the enter the swim.
A view from the
seating area overlooking the Specimen Lake
A similar method also involving a
float set-up to target the Siamese carp is aptly referred
to as ‘on the drop’ where a slow sinking hook bait is
presented (usually bread) and cast to showing fish in open
water. The hook bait during freefall mimics the free
offerings to produce instinctive takes from the Siamese
carp as they respond to the sound of the bait entering the
water. This is more suited towards the active angler and
whilst this method may be more demanding, the result can
be rewarding.
The Executive Swim & Bungalow
The idyllic end bay swim on the lake is reserved for anglers staying in the 'Executive Bungalow' positioned a stone's throw from the water's edge. Being a larger bungalow and larger 'double peg' the 'Executive' fishing option offers families, couples and the solo angler alike a first class fishing experience.
